Jason's 2nd steel of the day

Jason’s 2nd steel of the day

WOW! Now that was Awesome! Weeks like these make me wish steelhead season would never close. With the temps rising, some precip and the melting of lowland snow the water is still a bit higher than average which has lent to upstream push of our fish. The water for that matter though is significantly faster, greener below the Twisp River but still very calm and clear above that. As well the dreaded salmon snot is plaguing anglers down river too.

I have spent most time from about the downtown Twisp area to Winthrop and everywhere in between. Fish are picking up stones again, the week started with a preference toward goldens and ended leaning heavily towards the peacock stone. Water is still pretty slow so I’m rigging about 1.25 times water depth to my indicator (trying to touch bottom every now and then).

Garth's 1st ever steelhead

Garth’s 1st ever steelhead

I wanted to give a shout out to Garth and his first steelhead he, Jason and I had an incredible couple of days. Garths first steel came in a doubles session between him and Jason and almost escaped in a bush at the last second. I have feel blessed this season for getting to meet so many great folks and to have had such a good time.

Robins, Redwings and Killdeer, the signs of spring are piling up as the piles of snow are melting down. Fishing as I stated in last week’s report remains good but has changed a bit. Flows are rising with daily temps and this has led to some tribs dumping some dirty water, as well the salmon snot is breaking loose from the rocks and floating in the stream in chunks as big as a trout in some cases leading to hooks coming in looking like you’ve hooked a sculpin made of snot.

Fish defiantly charging to the spawning grounds which can make targeting them hit or miss, if some of your classic go to spots aren’t performing don’t hesitate to move on. Right now it seems when you are on them you are and when you’re not it’s an empty salmon snot covered whole so keep moving until you find them.

In the last few days I have still hit fish from the bottom few miles of river all the way to Winthrop. Moon cycle is headed towards full so look for the bight to be an early and late thing, maybe go have a beer at the pub mid-day rather than thrashing away at fickle fish.

Here's lookin at you

Great, great and great I pretty much don’t know what else to say about the steelhead season this year. As I’ve said a lot in the past few weeks and months really the weather has been stable and mild for the most part leading to some outstanding days on the river.

Spring 2013 1398
The run seems to have started up the river in mass over the last week or two as there is no ice in the lower section where they will sometimes hold back. There are a lot of fish around Methow, so a little less than half way up but fishing has been good for me all the way to Twisp with a few fish as far up as Winthrop.
