This has been a year of flux in every way in most every system. If not by way of natural disaster (fire, wind and floods) then by way of drought. Not only across the state but all across the west people are feeling the effects of climate change. Here on the Methow we are pretty used to conditions always changing and we have learned to roll with the punches.

Right now fishing has been great thanks to cooling temps just in the nick of time. I’m not saying it’s easy but if you know where to look and how, there can be huge rewards. Right now it’s hopper time for sure and if the hoppers are not warm and flying then the big fish will be waiting until they are. For that matter I would call peak time at about 10am until dark now that water temps have cooled.

As I said before though, we all must be flexible; by the time you read this report the temps may be warming which could change things. The main thing to remember is Fish where there’s Fish! Don’t waste time on slow clear water. Look for well oxygenated water (may be inches deep) or structure in at least 3 to 4 feet of water.

I am focusing most on hoppers and golden stone patterns dry you may catch other fish other ways but if you want big cuts this is the way to go. Although we lost some fish in the flood sections of the river last year I am still seeing and hearing reports of good trout all throughout the system. Water is low so walk and wade is recommended.

While rivers around the state close due to high temps the Methow, for now…remains open. Not only does the Methow, remain open, it remains fishing as well as ever. Not that the drought hasn’t taken its toll here too it’s just a matter of finding the right water, at the right time of the day.

I’m fishing early and almost exclusively dries. The golden stones are huge at this time of the summer and so are the hoppers. I start most days at about 6 at the latest and have usually had a great day by about 12 or 1:00pm. Water temps are usually in upper fifties in the morning with upper sixties around 4pm, with cooling temps and better fishing in the evening.

Today I fished with fellow MFA fishing guide Sarah and we hooked into four fish from 18 to 20+ inches in two runs.  I even got spanked by Hank the Tank, leaving me heartbroken and at the same time happy to see him for the fourth year in a row!!!!  That’s right Hank is still out there folks!

Right now is the time for smart use of boats or walk and wade. Most fishable water is reachable from the bank now; as well most holes have a safe place to cross at bottom or top end. It’s hopper time for sure and most fish are at the head of the hole or located near solid structures points such as logs and rocks in good depth and flow.

The most important part now is water temp obviously so I recommend carrying a thermometer and checking often at a depth of at least 3ft, if temps get above 65deg think about taking a break until evening.
