Methow Valley Fish Report

A wet and rainy June has kept the lake fishing very productive.  The rivers are still flowing high, but there are some fish to be found.  Damsel fly patters are still the hot ticket on all the low land lakes.  Use a damsel nymph pattern on a sink tip and slowly retrieve the bug back with little action.  Once you see fish rising to eat the adult damsels, switch to a floating line and present the adult pattern a few feet from the rise.  You should see the fish turn and hammer your fly.  On the rivers, the best action has been on tan articulated sculpin patterns, size 8.  The cutthroat have been hanging in the back of the big pools in large groups picking off fry that are being washed down the river.  Also try a stone fly nymph under a strike indicator for the hard to reach fish at the bottom of big pools.  Wading across the rivers is still not advised, the water is moving much too fast.  The forecast of sun and warm weather should bring the water levels down and signal the start of dry fly fishing.  River Gear:  4-5 wt dry fly hopper/dropper set up, a deep stone fly nymphing rig with a strike indicator and a 6-7 wt sinking line with a big bugger/nymph set up.  Lake Gear: 3-4 wt dry fly rig (damsel or callibaetis) and a 5-6 wt sink tip with a damsel nymph.

Methow Valley Fish Report

Awesome damsel dry fly action on Big Twin Lake.  The trout have been crowding the shore line crashing down on adult damsel flies.  If the action slows, go to the damsel nymph and find them down deep.  All the river flows came up this week.  Looks like the final melt has begun.  But, there is some action to be had.  Boulder Creek and Twisp River are both pumping hard, but should calm down in the next few weeks.  The Chewuch River has some good back eddy holes that are holding fish but they are few and far between.  The Methow River is starting to fish well.  There has been a stone fly hatch that started coming off last week.  Nice sized cutthroat are crashing dow on big drys with droppers.  River Gear:  4-5 wt dry fly hopper/dropper set up, a deep stone fly nymphing rig with a strike indicator and a 6-7 wt sinking line with a big bugger/nymph set up.  Lake Gear: 3-4 wt dry fly rig (damsel or callibaetis) and a 5-6 wt sink tip with a damsel nymph.  The rivers are still to high to wade across so be careful and watch your step.

Methow Valley Fish Report

Rain and cool weather has kept the lakes fishing great.  There has been hot action at Big Twin Lake with some nice sized cutthroat trout.  Also Black Pine Lake has cutthroat that are biting well.  Damsel nymphs have been working good.  They work well by also imitating the callibaetis nymph.  Use a light sink tip and a slow retrieve to entice the strike.  Chronomid fishing is also a good bet as midge hatch come off.   Use a 5wt rod with floating line and let the flies sink slowly.  Slowly retrieve the flies back while keeping an eye on the fly line.  If the fly line begins to straighten out, strip set and hopefully a fish ate your bugs.  Experiment with colors and sizes to dial in what the fish want.  All the lakes fish best from a boat, but Davis and Big/Little Twin Lakes have some shore access for casting.

The rivers are open but the flows are still high.  Within the next few weeks we should see better conditions for fishing.  Both Twisp and Chewuch Rivers should be fishable sooner than the Methow, so exploring these two smaller systems would be a good idea.  Get out your deep nymphing rigs out to dredge the bottom for fish.  Also a heavy sink tip with a streamer can attract the big ones from the fast water.  The rivers are still to high to wade across so be careful and watch your step.  The photo below is a happy angler from High Rock Ranch.
